Understanding Unattended Funerals

A Simple and Dignified Choice

When arranging a funeral, every family has different wishes, priorities, and circumstances. While many people choose a traditional attended funeral service, others prefer a simpler approach that focuses on dignity, affordability, and flexibility.

An unattended funeral provides a respectful farewell without family and friends attending the burial or cremation itself. At Gaunts of Wollaston, we understand that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to saying goodbye, which is why we offer unattended funeral options that ensure your loved one is cared for with professionalism and respect at every stage.

What Is an Unattended Funeral?

An unattended funeral is a funeral where the burial or cremation takes place without mourners being present. Family and friends may choose to hold a separate ceremony, memorial service, celebration of life, or gathering at a time and place that feels right for them.

Many people also refer to an unattended cremation as a direct cremation. This option has become increasingly popular in recent years for those seeking a straightforward and affordable alternative to a traditional funeral service.

Why Do Families Choose an Unattended Funeral?

Every family's reasons are unique, but some of the most common include:

  • Simplicity - Some individuals express a wish for a simple farewell without a formal funeral service or large gathering.
  • Affordability - Unattended funerals are typically less expensive than traditional attended services, making them a practical option for families looking to manage funeral costs.
  • Flexibility - Without the need to arrange a service at the crematorium or cemetery, families can choose to remember their loved one in a way that feels most meaningful to them.
  • Personal Preference - Many people prefer a private approach, allowing family and friends to celebrate a life in their own time and in their own way.

Unattended Cremation

At Gaunts of Wollaston, our unattended cremation service includes the funeral director's charges together with the cremation fee at Waseley Hills Crematorium's Direct Cremation slot.

This option provides a dignified cremation without mourners attending and is available for a total cost of £1,800.

Following the cremation, families can choose how they would like to commemorate their loved one, whether through a private gathering, memorial event, or ash scattering ceremony.

Unattended Burial

An unattended burial allows the burial to take place without family and friends attending the graveside.

Our unattended burial funeral director charges are £1,200, with burial fees payable separately. Additional cemetery fees may also apply depending on the burial location and whether a new or existing grave is used.

Can We Still Hold a Memorial Service?

Absolutely.

Many families choose an unattended funeral because it gives them the freedom to organise a separate memorial service or celebration of life without the time restrictions that can accompany a traditional funeral.

This could take place weeks or even months later and may be held at a family home, place of worship, community venue, or another meaningful location.

Is an Unattended Funeral the Right Choice?

There is no right or wrong way to arrange a funeral. The best choice is one that reflects the wishes of your loved one and provides comfort for those left behind.

An unattended funeral can offer a simple, dignified, and affordable alternative to a traditional funeral service while still ensuring your loved one receives the highest standard of care.

At Gaunts of Wollaston, we are here to help you understand all of your options and guide you through every stage of the arrangements with care, compassion, and professionalism.
